levin – Lightning*; a flash of lightning; also, any bright light or flame. (from the OED WOTD, which also offers this arresting turn of phrase by way of illustration: “Swift as the levin from the sneezing skie.”)

Which gives me occasion to note how often I see “lightning” spelled “lightening.” Interesting, in that doing so requires adding a syllable.
