Oxford Dictionaries Online’s new words for August include such dubious coinages as “derp,” “dappy,” and “phablet,” as well as the instantly ubiquitous “twerk.”

If the fact that such of-the-moment pop-speak is getting the nod from the venerable Oxford word people strikes you as a Certain Harbinger of the Apocalypse, then keep in mind this  point from lexicographer Kory Stamper: “remember that dictionaries merely serve to record language, not legitimize a particular use,” as well as this clarification from Oxford Dictionaries: “While ODO focuses on the current language and practical usage, the OED shows how words and meanings have changed over time.”

So now you know. (Now, what the heck does “TL;DR” mean?**)

**Apparently, “too long; didn’t read.” OK, that is a Harbinger of the Apocalpyse.
