“Cronut” and “binge-watching” are getting a lot of play as word-of-the-year candidates. The NYT ran Grant Barrett’s (of A Way With Words) list under the headline “A wordnado of words in 2013,” demonstrating the continuing memetastic cultural power both of the portmanteau word and a fantastically ridiculous Syfy channel movie. Anne Curzan on the Linga Franca blog is pleading for “recombobulate” to become equally a rising star in our language (it has my vote).
